This is the lifeblood of WIDB: airchecks, line checks, production masters. The synergy of people working together and stretching their personal limits. This output represents a new focus and success for each person at the time.

The selections currently on-line are limited to those on hand in Tom or Gary's collections. While we have a lot of stuff from many different years, it's not NEARLY enough. If you wonder why there's a lot of stuff from the early-mid 70's (Gary's time) or the early 80's (Tom's time), it's NOT because we think its the best stuff. It's because it's 100% of what we have!

We've made a big effort to gather audio vignettes from ALL times, and this shall be doubled WITH YOUR HELP!

The reunion is coming. All of you have at least one schlumpy old cohort that needs a C'dale recharge so bad that he/she won't admit it. NOW is the time to start the campaign to dislodge the law of inertia! Find the embarrasing old aircheck of your friend! Or, just find one from when he/she was at the station. This will do the trick! You might have it yourself. Or, maybe you can call old friends, and tell them you're willing to take the time review their old tapes. (Try the car for playing cassettes). The old tapes, which everyone always INTEND to go through, are deteriorating and in a few years they will be unplayable. So, work on it! And, when you come up with something good, share it with us. Try to give us a bit of ID and background if you can! 29 years is a lot of years! Help us, please!

??.79: Station Promo112k
"Remember the 60's" Jingles mostly left WIDB in 1972, completely by 1976. But produced ID's took their place. Tim Cawley, Production Director, made many of these that were used for years. Here is one we found from 1979. Send us more.

197??: Lowell's Audio Spot 148k
A recent trip to C'dale and an impromptu meeting with MaryLou (yes, THE MaryLou) allows us to place the production of this unlabeled spot at sometime between 1976 and 1978. No other information is currently available--can someone help us out? We think this may be Tim Cawley and Ken Lynch, but we're not sure....

1986: Ralph Edmunds Brown Bag Lunch Promo #1 80k
1986: Ralph Edmunds Brown Bag Lunch Promo #2 85k
Dale Gardner spent many creative years at WIDB, as Music Director, Program Director andGeneral Manager. But a recently unearthed "lost tape" of Dale's early production involvement in Wright I clearly demonstrates the emerging genius. We suspect Alan Matthews, and others, were involved here but we do not have the whole story. Here are two promos for the "Ralph Edmunds Brown Bag Lunch Hour," circa 1986. What did this show sound like? Does anyone have tapes?

1979: Gatsby's Promo 219k
A conversational approach to promoting WIDB's Friday Night at Gatsby's. Originally called "The South will Rise Again", featuring Southern Rock and simulcast live when this promotional night began in the Spring of1978, WIDB continued this Friday Night tradition of music & giveaways, well into the 1980s, when it morphed into a remote with regular live reports with the DJ on the air. In this promo, Mark ("what an a**hole") Slaga, then the host of the show, is interviewed by Ed Knych about the "what goes on" at Gatsbys, complete with sound bites.

1983: Gatsby's Promo 120k
Discovered in one of WIDB's Introduction to WIDB audio tapes that were often produced for new student orientation meetings as well as for sales presentations, here's a John Bernstein-produced promo for our Gatsby's Friday Night show circa Summer/Fall 1983.

1979: Guy on Stairs ID 83k
During the time Master Control was located on the 4th floor of the Student Center, Mr Levi found a long extension cord, snaked it into the stairwell, hit "record" and did a silly promo, all at 2am (and isn't that the time that all silly promos are made?).

04.83: Airwaves Nightclub Spot 96k
Throughout the '90s it has not been uncommon to hear a radio station promote itself with a vignette of song snippets that are decidedly NOT of their format, followed by a song in their style. In the late '70s thru the mid '80s, conservatism in radio dictated that drawing attention to your competition this way was a bad thing and this type of promotion was practically non-existant. This spot, produced by Tom, took the former approach to sell what was then the only all "new wave" club in town, and perhaps to also take pot-shots at the local CHR station. Airwaves was located in the basement of ABC Liquors and featured a 6" high stage. WIDB held the"Beat Night" promotion there on Thursdays beginning with the club's opening in Fall 1982, and the club played host to the Circle Jerks, the Violent Femmes and Ministry among others in 1983, as well as being the late-night hangout for many of our staff. Does anyone know how long Airwaves stayed open?

09.82: Booby's Spot 69k
In another spot written by Sam (see Hairbrains Spot), the script called for "Tastebuds", and they were played by Jim Baer-Chief Engineer 1982-83, Jim Biever--DJ, who would become the head of SPC Consorts for the 1983-84 school year, Steve Mitchell-Jazz Director, Sue Mroz--General Secretary and Tom. With an end tag embellished by Tom.

03.83: WIDB at Dingbats Spot 121k
Someone in sales had worked out a deal to have a spring bash in Chicago at the "famed" nightclub Dingbats, former home of Mr. T. Inspired, Mike Bennett put on his best 'huh!' and co-produced with John Bernstein. Does anyone remember attending this event?

03.82: Trip Thru the Wall ID160k
Inspired by some old promos heard in the '70s on WXRT-Chicago, Tom Piazza set out to spell W-I-D-B using syllables from various songs in the library. While not exactly an original concept, apparently it lived in the promo rack in master control for some time after Tom graduated.

1989: New Releases Show Aircheck 254k
Dale Gardner and Harold Clemmens doing the new releases show, 1989. This is from the Student Center, and is an actual aircheck. At this point, Dale and Harold are in their last few months at the station.

02.91: New Releases Show Aircheck 200k
The new releases show continued into the 90's with Jim Cooley, Music Director, along with Chris Perry, Jeff Ruznic (?) and Lori Edwards. Jim took his music seriously. He was a member of the Blue Meanies, along with Bill Sollidor. Chris Perry later took over for Jim as Music Director. Here, on the New Releases show, February, 1991, Jim and the crew play an amusing spot for WIDB classified Valentines. Anybody know how popular these were?

02.91: Valentine's Day Promo 127k
Here, on the New Releases show, February, 1991, Jim and the crew play an amusing spot for WIDB classified Valentines. Anybody know how popular these were?

10.82: Marilyn's Spots Outtakes 184k
WARNING!!! Both of these spots (comboed as one file) are rated NC-17!!!!
During another late production session to finish a couple of standard spots for air the following day, Tom was having problems getting thru one particular line in the copy. This led to many miscues/re-takes, and out of boredom Tom ad-libbed thru the rest of one of the screw-ups which resulted in the first of these 2 "never-before-heard-or-aired "spots." This first altered spot inspired an "alternate (and also NFA!) version" of another sheet of copy for the same retailer.

1979 (?): Police Raid ID 136k
Well, we're guessing that this is another creation of Tim Cawley, seeing that he did most of the stuff on the tape that this piece came from, but we really can't be sure.......anyone?

1978 (?): DJ Round-Up Promo 184k
In another rare gem, this station promo features Mr. levi running thru all the DJs and their shows, allowing you to plan your day.

12.82: Domino's Spot 136k
Starting with some pretty straight-forward copy, Tom & Bob add the right amount of enthusiasm and production savvy to this pre-holiday call for assistance to get Thompson Point wired (Carrier Current) for WIDB. The hardest part was timing out the pre-recorded VOs to make it fit on the 30 sec bed!

1982: Hairbrains Spot 66k
Our head copywriter Sam (Samantha ??--we can't remember her last name!), whose work can be heard in many of the commercials produced during the 1982-83 school year, stars in this wonderful tome for the Hairbrains Hair Salon, inspired by Frank Zappa's sarcastic look at pop music and the San Fernando Valley. The original copy was embellished upon by Tom, who recruited John Bernstein to help him sing in the background.

That's all for now! More to come, and we look forward to adding your contributions! Go here to find out how to contribute!
